Ms. Fournier's last day

4 months seemed to go much more quickly than anyone in Room 9 thought that it would!  Ms. Fournier's last day with us was on Friday, April 20th (which was also her 22nd birthday!).  We celebrated the end of this wonderful experience with a party and a gift for Ms. Fournier. We were also lucky to spend some time with Ms. Fournier's grandparents! They came and spent the afternoon reading with us and Ms. Fournier's grandmother even made everyone cupcakes!  Yummy!

We worked hard all week on making a special bag with everyone's signatures for Ms. Fournier to take to her first job. We filled the bag full of wonderful books and we know that wherever she ends up, she won't forget all of the wonderful students in Room 9!  We will miss her!

Good luck Ms. Fournier!! :)

Pajama day picnic

Friday, April 20th was the last day of spirit week.  We ended the week wearing our favorite pajamas and having a picnic outside.  It was definitely chillier than we thought but we braved the cold for some outside fun. Here are some pictures from our picnic!  Everyone had a blast!

Food Donation

I would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who donated food to the Colchester Food Shelf!  We had over 18 bags of food and toiletries to deliver last Friday, April 20th! Here are some pictures from our amazing trip next door.  We love helping our community!

We decided to take a picture with our bags of food before we walked next door.

Look at this amazing second grade line walking quietly through the halls of UMS!

We have just delivered our bags and now we are looking at everything inside the Food Shelf!  The students were amazed that it was like a regular grocery store!

We had a chance to ask some questions.  Everyone was being a respectful listener.

Now we are getting ready to leave, but we are taking one last look around!

Food Drive

This is just a reminder that next week is our classes week to collect food for the Colchester food shelf located right next to UMS!  Any nonperishable items would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you in advance for your help!

Remarkable Rocks

Miss Fournier has been doing an amazing job teaching the children all about rocks!!  She has taught them the three different types of rocks (sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous), the rock cycle,  the earth is made up of layers of rocks, and that we use rocks on a daily basis.  Here are some pictures that highlight the learning that is happening in Room 9!

To start the unit, the children generated a list of things they already knew about rocks and what they wanted to learn about rocks during this unit.

Here are all of the books that we have on rocks and minerals.

Now that the unit is almost over, the chidlren have done a great job filling in all of the wonderful information that they have learned about rocks!

We made a very impressive list of all the ways we use rocks in our lives!

Here is our rock museum with our rock gardens and pictures of ways that we use rocks.

We made edible rocks during this unit!  We used Starburst to make metamorphic rocks. We used heat and pressure from our hands to mold the Starburst into yummy rocks.  (Then we ate them!)

I know these don't look like much, but these edible rocks are our "igneous rocks".  We melted chocolate and let it cool and harden to form these rocks.    Who doesn't like a big piece of chocolate?
We also made sedimentary rocks by layering graham crackers, icing, and sprinkles.  I don't have a picture of these rocks because my camera battery died!  All 3 rock types were delicious and were a great visual way to see the difference between each rock!
