The Iditarod Dog Sled Race

We have been learning all about the Alaskan Iditarod race, which is a sled dog race where the racers travel over 900 miles!  The students have had A LOT of fun with this!  The race route is hung in the hallway outside our classroom.  We have followed 8 different mushers throughout the race and Dallas Seavey was the first musher to cross the finish line early this morning!!  We have really enjoyed following the route and learning the rules of this difficult race!  We have also talked about the real reason this race was started, which was to commemorate  the serum run from Anchorage to Nome in the winter if 1925.  We will start to learn about Alaska and how living in Alaska is similar yet different from living in Vermont.

  1. Our whole family REALLY enjoyed following the Iditarod together- what an exciting race & finish it was this year! We're hoping to start reading
Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod by Gary Paulsen. I read it years ago and really enjoyed it!

    1. I am so happy that you enjoyed it! The finish was VERY dramatic this year! This is one of my favorite units to teach. I'll have to check out that book by Gary Paulsen, it sounds perfect for this unit!
